Virus, spyware, trojan, and more. These are too common these days. Many people are coming to me almost everyday and telling me on fixing their computers and flashdrives because their antivirus won’t detect those pesky viruses. And they often arrive to a decision on reformatting their drive.

In this article I’ll not be tackling yet on how to fix those problems, but will tell you how ( up until my knowledge on viruses ) those viruses do and giving you tips on detecting a virus yourself.

Why AntiVirus won’t work?

Simple, it is because its sometimes you thought it is a virus but its not. Spyware, worms, trojan now a days works almost exactly as a virus. And your antivirus won’t work with some of those (even if you update your AV daily). There are also lots of low profile viruses out there that AV companies don’t know. That’s why they can’t detect the virus.

Why Am I Still Infected Even If My AV Knows Its A Virus?

Most antivirus has a lag time on reading files. So there would be a delay on your AV’s response rate (processing speed can also be a factor). Sometimes or most of the times you click on your unknown programs faster than your AV can read file and give you a report.

How To Know a Virus or Similar?

Its difficult. But the only best tip I can give you is that if you think that there is an alien file in your pc (my docs) or flash drive specially program files ( exe, com, bat ) that you think its not from you then delete it.

There is also some common properties with viruses and alike. Most viruses that can spread quickly only have a file size of less than 50kB. You may also look at the properties of your suspected file and check the date modified and date created. You will notice about the discrepancies on these dates. Most viruses have earlier modified date than the created date. Isn’t that impossible for a normal file? (ex. A virus property states that it was created las July 10, 2007 but the modified date is Aug 7, 2006). Sometimes the created date or modified date is just too old to be true.

  1. Nicolas Said,

Nice site you got here. ;-) You chose a great template too. One thing : the in-text ads from Adbrite are really annoying, I don’t recommend them at all, it would be better if you use Adsense. :-)

    Nice work!

Fell free to come see my site too,

  2. Lee Gao Said,

many viruses are a little strip of binary with enough ‘executional’ logic to insert the binary into another program and basically takes over it, this will then be a problem for you ;)
